Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

From looking back at my preliminary task I feel that I have improved and learnt a lot in all the areas of my design work. I did more research for my pop music magazine which helped  a lot with designing and constructing my magazine as I knew all the forms and conventions of pop music magazines as well as what the layout should like and typical colour schemes and images that are used pop on music magazines. My colour scheme for my preliminary task wasn't consistent and also the layout was also very unprofessional due to my lack of research and planning I didn't know much about student magazines or about suitable colour schemes and layouts or the forms and conventions of magazines. Due to the pop music magazine being my main task I wanted to ensure it looked professional and that I had a continuity throughout my magazine. I was more careful when choosing a colour scheme and I looked back at my research for the types of colours pop music magazines use. I also made sure my colour scheme consisted of 3-4 colours because I saw that this was typical and I ensured I stayed with the colours I had chose to show continuity which would make my magazine more professional.  I focused more on my layout then I did with my preliminary task so that general conventions were placed appropriately. My contents page layout is also better as I did more research into contents pages and I included article headings and a variety of articles. I also learnt how to create a brand identity through continuity and my masthead.

For my main task I included a wider variety of images due to my range of shots of I took and I also used my research to decide on facial expression and gestures which I didn't do with my preliminary task. I used medium shots, close ups and mid close ups for my main task as well as focusing more on mise on scene and so things such as lighting, facial expression and gestures. My images definitely looked more professional for my pop music magazine and fit in with my genre. I think that my images look more appealing than on my student magazine.

I got feedback to help me develop my pop music magazine which ensured I used what my audience wanted to see in my magazine and also the overall look. I got feedback throughout my main task and I didn't do this for my preliminary task. I also learnt to choose more appropriate fonts due to doing more research which enabled that I chose ones to suit my genre using 3-4 fonts which is typical in pop music magazines.

My progression in technology has improved my design work. When doing my main task I used tools on Indesign that I had never used before. I also used Photoshop when producing my full product, for the first time which made me images look more appealing as well as enabling me to give my images the finishes I wanted. They were finished to a better standard than the images used in my preliminary task. Due to my progression in technology my pages were more complex and professional compared to my student magazine which was very simple and the pages also didn't contain very much content.

As a result of little things such as more research and planning, better quality photos and choosing appropriate fonts and colours that relate to my genre I have ended up with a more professional and appealing magazine that actually does look like a pop music magazine including all the forms and conventions it should include for my target audience to get what they expect out of my magazine. It also included an appropriate mode of address and I also kept referring back to research and feedback for every decision I made.
